Fire Flower (poem)
''I am here in the back of your throat, cherry and vanilla ice cream in July...''
1. July
is the warmth
of your tongue,
the slow descent
of my hairs
in the back
of your throat—
the only fireworks
you wish to ignite.
2. I am here
in the back
of your throat,
cherry and vanilla
ice cream in July,
horsepower at dusk.
And you
who are impassioned
within the alpenglow
of your tongue,
set fire to pyrotechnics
like a goddamn arsonist.
About Fire Flower…
''Fire Flower'' is a sexy two-for-one deal that I adore! As part of a small project last summer, I wrote micro poems for each summer month. This summer, I’m revisiting those poems. I spent considerable time refining the first iteration two Saturdays ago (''July is the warmth…''). I added two extra lines in response to a comment made by my girlfriend regarding this poem. I took her remark ''fireworks in the form of words,'' and ran with it! The following day, I returned to the same iteration and was inspired to expand it into a larger poem, which is how poem number two came to be. One of my favorite aspects of poetry is that it is fluid and may be rewritten numerous times!
‘‘July is the warmth of your tongue…’’
‘‘I am here, at the back of your throat…’’
Stay tuned to see what I’ll compose for August! (My birthday month) #leoszn
