đď¸Welcome to Victorian Voices, a free community-based newsletter established by aspiring book author Somiah Nettles!đď¸
Hi Somiah, who are you?
Hello there! I'm Somiah Nettles, a poet (a Victorian one at that) and classical pianist residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm a sophomore in college studying English and creative writing, and I've had nothing but excellent experiences with my English and creative writing professors thus far. Iâll have you know that Emily Dickinson is my favorite poet, and Sergei Rachmaninov is my favorite composer. As much as I enjoy writing and playing the piano, I also enjoy being outside in nature, long aimless car rides, and, of course, going out for coffee or boba milk tea. My wardrobe consists of pinks and greens; I live with five cats (though Iâm a dog person); and Iâm a very friendly Leo.
Why did you create this newsletter?
I created Victorian Voices in the summer of 2023 to divert my attention away from Instagram and onto something fresh. Since 2021, I've been pursuing a career in creative writing while also studying classical music. Victorian Voices will keep me focused on writing, my musical studies, and community building. I'm thrilled to be able to share my work and build a community of readers, writers, and music enthusiasts.
Why ââVictorian Voicesââ?
âRoyal Coreâ and the âVictorian Eraâ have always intrigued me as a child. Because Iâm very drawn to the classics and romanticize my life, I prefer to think of myself as a Victorian poet living in the twenty-first century, which is how the name for this publication came about. Victorian Voices is a free community-based newsletter that fuses creative writing and classical music, making it a resourceful community for writers and music enthusiasts. Given the similarities between creative writing and music, Victorian Voices aims to introduce writers to unique creative writing approaches with projects like DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO WRITE, which are monthly concise essays, as well as make classical music more accessible to new listeners with projects like Musical Mondays, which are monthly concise articles that detail the life and music of a different classical composer.
How it works:
On the first Monday of each month, your inbox will receive an article detailing the life and music of a different classical composer. On the last Monday of each month, your inbox will receive either a poem or essay on a different creative writing approach.
Thank you for stopping by. See you in your inbox!
Victorian Voices, Somiah xx
